12 Tips for Coping with Christmas
Christmas is nearly here and it can be a difficult time for some people. We have made 12 tips, some based on the 5 Ways to Wellbeing, to help you cope with the festive period to help you build small actions into your everyday life which can help to make a real difference for coping with Christmas.
1. Festive Beverages
It’s fine to enjoy a festive drink or two, but try to pace yourself. Take Notice of how much alcohol you’re consuming and stay in control so you can enjoy the celebrations.2. Eat Well
Aim for balance—not too much, not too little. Eat in a way that leaves you feeling content and comfortable. And yes, it’s okay to go back for a little nibble later!3. Be Active
Get outside for a gentle stroll—whether it’s a park, a coastal path, or just around the block. Keep Active and Take Notice of the sights, sounds, and smells of the season.4. Relax
Make time for stillness. Sit quietly, take a deep breath, and enjoy a mindful pause. A few calm moments can recharge your day.5. Sleep
Try to keep a regular bedtime routine, even during the holidays. And if you need to, don’t underestimate the power of a nap!6. Challenge Yourself
Forget big resolutions. Set a small, realistic goal and work towards it step by step. Keep Learning—maybe try something new just for fun.7. Don’t Believe the Hype
Remember, Christmas isn’t always like the adverts or films. Let go of perfect expectations and focus on what’s right for you and those around you.8. Reach Out & Connect
If things feel overwhelming, speak to someone you trust. Connection is powerful—ask for help when you need it.9. Digital Detox
Take a break from screens. Putting your phone down for a while can really help you feel more present and relaxed.10. Grief at Christmas
If you’re grieving, be kind to yourself. It’s okay to feel joy and sadness at the same time—both are part of the human experience.11. Be Kind—to Yourself
Protect your energy. Take breaks, say no when you need to, and set boundaries. Do what’s right for you this season.12. Know Where to Find Support
