Self-Harm Awareness Day 2017

The 1st March is Self-Harm Awareness Day and it is the perfect opportunity for schools and youth groups to raise awareness and talk about an issue that impacts approx. 13% of teenagers.

Washington Mind’s Young People’s Project are doing just that and are hosting a Self-Harm Awareness Day Event on 1st March 2017 where they will be giving out information about Self-Harm to professionals, parents and young people themselves about Self-Harm and raising awareness on the subject. The event will run from 2pm until 6:30pm at The Life House where attendees will get information on what services there are in the area to offer support, where you can find information online as well as the chance to take part in interactive activities. For more information please contact Washington Mind on: 0191 417 8043.

Washington Mind’s Young People’s Project believes that Self-harm is essentially a coping mechanism that enables a person to deal with very difficult feelings, painful memories and overwhelming experiences. It is a way of dealing with the associated intense emotional distress. They also recognise that talking and thinking about self-harm can cause anxiety and even fear and for these reasons many people avoid talking about it. However in order to understand self-harming they feel it is necessary to talk about it in a safe way. For more information on self-harm including local services, personal stories and information for parents, please visit our Young People’s Self-Harm page.

Sun.fm recently visited Washington Mind to speak with the staff on hand as they prepare for a day of events to help young and old people cope with self-harm, to read more about their visit and see a video of the staff talking about self-harm please click here.
