Bronze Achievement For South Tyneside Council In Better Health At Work Awards

South Tyneside Council has achieved an award for raising awareness of a range of health and wellbeing initiatives with its workforce.

Tailored health information is now available to all Council staff, as well as stop smoking support and the offer of an NHS health check for those eligible who are aged 40-74.

As a result of these initiatives the Council has been presented with the North East Better Health at Work award which is an evidence based workplace health improvement programme.

Councillor Tracey Dixon, Lead Member for Independence and Wellbeing, said: “Following consultation with staff last year it was agreed that the Council would support specific campaigns that the workforce highlighted as a priority such as such as women’s health.

“We are delighted to have been presented with this award. Staff are our most valuable asset and having a healthy workforce is a priority for the Council.

“A staff health intranet page has now been set up as well as a number of staff trained in mental health first aid. A weight loss club is also proving popular with our workforce and a range of health campaigns are being supported across the Council.”

Criteria for the bronze award includes:

  • A workforce health needs assessment
  • Support campaigns based on staff feedback
  • Encouraging employees to have regular health checks
  • Annual flu vaccination

The Better Health at Work Award is a unique partnership between all 12 of the region’s Local Authorities, the NHS, and the Northern TUC. The Award recognises the efforts of local employers in addressing health issues within the workplace. It is free, flexible and open to all employers in the North East, regardless of size, location or type of business.

There are four levels, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Continuing Excellence which employers progress through.
