The Charles Young Centre
The centre was purchased in 1980 by the Welfare Fund. Extensive repairs and refurbishment were necessary to transform the old church into a social and recreational centre offering a wide range of activities and facilities for everyone. Use of the centre began in 1981 and was officially opened on the 1st December 1982 by The Mayor of South Tyneside, Councillor Elizabeth Scrimger and Athlete Steve Cram.
Our main function is to provide a daily 3 course meal, and light entertainment, for the elderly and handicapped. We provide subsidised transport for those unable to attend personally. It currently costs £6 to £7 in total, depending on where you live.
The cost of the 3 course meal is £7.50
Current Membership costs £20.00 per year.
The centre consists of two large halls, one with a bar, stage and large dance floor, a bar/lounge with television, music system, books, games etc., and also a large extension. All rooms are available for hire, parties, dances and meetings.
We have 2 wheelchair accessible minibuses providing transport from and to your door.
