Sunderland is recruiting sail trainees to act as crew on some of the magnificent ships setting sail from the city at the start of next year’s Tall Ships Races.
Tall Ship trainees will spend 7 nights on-board one of the participating vessels on a voyage to Esbjerg in Denmark from Friday 13 July until Friday 20 July 2018. In Esbjerg trainees will take part in the festival-like Crew Parade and Prize-Giving Ceremony before flying back to the UK.
Experience the adventure of crashing through the waves, far out to sea, on a ship where you know you’re an essential part of the team. You can be at the helm steering or in the galley preparing dinner, scrubbing the decks or hoisting sails, but whatever you’re doing you’ll be part of a watch and you’ll have an experience you’ll never forget. With help from the ships’ captains and crew, trainees will be given the chance to learn team and leadership skills, build self-confidence and literally learn the ropes.
Who can apply to be a Sunderland Sail Trainee?
Sail training is open to anyone, regardless of ability and experience and trainees do not need to have any previous sailing experience. As long as you’re enthusiastic and prepared to learn, that’s what matters.
Applicants must be over 15 years old on the date of sailing (14 July 2018). If you’re younger than 18 years when you apply you’ll need permission from a parent or guardian.
